TLDR Upadacitinib significantly improved alopecia universalis and psoriatic arthritis in a patient.
This case-based review highlights the sudden improvement of alopecia universalis (AU) and psoriatic arthritis in a patient treated with upadacitinib, a JAK1 selective inhibitor. AU, a severe form of alopecia areata, involves complete hair loss and is influenced by immune system factors like IFN-γ and IL-15. While various treatments have shown inconsistent results, JAK inhibitors have emerged as a promising option due to their ability to modulate the immune response. The case presented provides evidence supporting the efficacy of upadacitinib in managing AU, particularly in patients with concurrent inflammatory conditions such as psoriatic arthritis. This adds to the limited reports of successful upadacitinib treatment for AU, especially in patients with other conditions like atopic dermatitis.
