Histiocytes are a type of immune cell found in tissues throughout the body. They play a crucial role in the body's defense system by engulfing and digesting foreign substances, bacteria, and dead or damaged cells. These cells are part of the mononuclear phagocyte system and include macrophages and dendritic cells, which are essential for initiating immune responses and maintaining tissue homeostasis.
