January 2013 in “Surgical Science” The study compared nutritional deficiencies in 171 patients (121 underwent Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and 50 underwent Sleeve Gastrectomy) over the first post-operative year. It found that, except for vitamin B6 deficiency, which was more common in Sleeve Gastrectomy patients, there were no significant differences in vitamin and iron deficiencies between the two groups. Both groups required similar supplementation, with a minimum of 1000 IU of vitamin D per day necessary to affect levels, and intramuscular administration of vitamin B12 being the only effective route. Complications were rare in the first year post-surgery. The study concluded that vitamin and iron deficiencies were not less frequent in Sleeve Gastrectomy patients compared to Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass patients, and recommended standard supplementation, including iron for premenopausal women, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 as needed.
