TLDR The nanogel improves alopecia treatment by enhancing drug retention and targeting.
This study focused on creating a chitosan-based minoxidil nanogel for improved topical treatment of alopecia. Traditional minoxidil formulations face challenges like poor scalp retention and rapid drug release. The researchers used the ionic gelation method and optimized the formulation with a Box–Behnken design. The resulting nanogel had a particle size of 135.4 nm, a low polydispersity index, a high positive zeta potential, and an entrapment efficiency of 89.7%. It demonstrated skin-compatible pH, pseudoplastic rheological behavior, good spreadability, and physical stability. In vitro studies showed sustained drug release over 48 hours and better drug deposition compared to conventional solutions, indicating its potential as an effective topical delivery system for alopecia treatment.
