Hair Transplant Techniques from FUE and FUT to Graft Biology, Regenerative Adjuncts, and Reconstruction: Scoping Review with SAIMSARA

This scoping review synthesizes research on hair transplant techniques, analyzing 129 studies with 7,542 participants. It highlights the importance of a tailored approach using follicular unit excision (FUE) as a flexible but not universally applicable method. Success in hair transplants is linked to aligning donor assessment, graft handling, and recipient design to individual patients, with high follicle survival rates observed in specific contexts, such as >90% in male androgenetic alopecia and 85% in pediatric cicatricial alopecia. Patient satisfaction is notably high, reaching 95% in beard reconstruction. The review underscores the significance of regenerative adjuncts, anesthesia improvements, and recipient-site geometry, though variability in study designs limits direct comparisons. It advocates for moving beyond a single-technique approach to patient-specific planning and calls for future research with standardized measures to better determine optimal technique combinations.
