November 2017 in “JoLS Journal of Life Sciences” The study investigated the antioxidant activities and hair-growth promotion effects of Tenebrio molitor larvae extracts (TMEs). The extracts demonstrated significant antioxidant activities, with DPPH radical scavenging at 81.17% and nitrite scavenging at 43.69%, comparable to blueberry extracts. TMEs promoted the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells (DPCs) and NIH3T3 fibroblast cells, increasing cell proliferation by 218% and 116%, respectively. Additionally, TMEs prevented DHT-induced cytotoxicity in DPCs and countered the potassium channel blocking effects of tolbutamide in NIH3T3 cells. These findings suggested that TMEs could serve as a functional therapeutic agent for preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth.
